The Fairfax Art League was founded in 1986 by six artists exhibiting their work as a group in the John C. Wood complex. In 1987 the six artists, after much consideration about the name this new group should adopt (Guild, Club, etc.), chose The Fairfax Art League. League was selected since League, by definition, is a covenant between persons. In our case the covenant is to promote art in the community. In 1988, the League applied for incorporation through the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts resulting in the League's incorporation as a Non Profit Corporation in February 1989. In the years since its inception the League's membership has grown to over 100.

History
|
|
Six artists exhibiting their work as a group at the John C. Wood complex founded the Fairfax Art League in 1986. In 1987, the six artists, after much consideration about the name this new group should adopt (Guild, Club, Society, etc.) chose to call themselves The Fairfax Art League (FAL). They chose the word "League" since, by definition it means covenant between persons. For FAL, the covenant is to promote art in the community.
|
| In late 1988, the League applied for Articles of Incorporation through the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts, resulting in the League's incorporation as a non-profit corporation in February of 1989. In the years since its inception, the League's membership has varied from 80 to 150 members. |
| League activities include monthly meetings from September through June. Each meeting includes a short business session, refreshments and conversation, as well as a demonstration by an accomplished professional in some phase of the visual arts. |
| Members have the opportunity to see various artistic approaches and techniques and to exchange technical information. |
| |
| The Fairfax Art League has an active program in the Fairfax area. The public is invited to events and exhibitions at the galleries where each visitor may vote for their favorite work of art. The piece receiving the most votes is awarded a "People's Choice Award". Members and volunteers staff the galleries. Exhibits at the galleries change monthly and are usually followed by a reception. All members are encouraged to bring their work. There is no jurying process but paintings must be framed in a suitable manner. Please refer to Rules and Procedures for Exhbiting Members' Works at League Events. |
| A highlight of the League's exhibit season is the annual City of Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts, held every spring. Created to enhance the cultural opportunities in the Fairfax/George Mason University area, Spotlight features a month-long series of musical events, arts and crafts, tours of Old Town Fairfax, an Art Walk and many other events of interest to the community. The Fairfax Art League's reception for the Spotlight exhibit is held in the Old Town Hall where works by talented high school students are also showcased. |
