Gabriel never had any formal instruction in the fine arts. His talent is but a natural God-given gift which he thinks was handed down from his artist grandmother (Chinese brush painting), father (watercolor seascapes) , and mother (portraits in oil.) In fact, most members of his close family are either artists or musicians. The earliest he could think of handling a pencil or brush was at the age of four.
“I have always been on a search for a distinct identity in the use of the brush. Whether it be a landscape, a figure, or an abstract, it has always been such a struggle. But then recently I used the flat of the brush to layer an almost transparent glaze of color upon another color, using dialogonal, vertical , and horizontal strokes. In doing so, an image is formed in an almost impressionistic yet abstracted style, surprisingly phenomenal yet also challenging. Patience and persistence on the artist’s side takes over for the right color to come about and the suspense is more so heightened in the decision of when to stop. This interplay of color layering gives me such joy and peace as I see myself working on it … the transformation and the coming about of who I truly am in my lifetime search of what I love doing. After having been somebody else for such a long time, I am now happy with a brush on hand, a color palette on the side, and a canvas facing me.”
